Create a looping motion poster that promotes a gallery exhibition for an assigned artist. Study the artist’s visual language, style, and creative process, then design an original poster inspired by those principles, not by copying their work, but by studying and interpreting their visual language into a poster design.
PROJECT BRIEF
The artist that I was assigned for this project was Shinichi Maruyama. He is a Japanese photographer who captures movement, imperfection, and fleeting moments. Inspired by wabi-sabi, he uses liquids, light, and high-speed photography to reveal forms the human eye can’t normally see, often turning motion into abstract, flowing shapes. I mostly honed in on his “Nude” and “Water Sculpture" exhibitions.
THE ARTIST
EARLY IDEATION
I initially wanted to base my posters on the "Nude” series, where he took long exposure photos of people dancing to create these beautiful abstract shapes. I wanted to recreate the movement of the series along with the abstract aspect of the series. Here were some early experimentations and ideation I did.
Unfortunately, I was having a hard time figuring out how to do the beautiful motion blur effect that Murayama achieved, so I adapted and decided it would be best to try another series.
A DIFFERENT DIRECTION
After changing directions, I decided to base my poster on his Water Sculpture series, which had similar themes, and I could execute it better. This series focuses on fragility and imperfection in movement; the lucid shapes are given meaning through the movement. I wanted to recreate that using Cinema 4D's water simulations.
FINAL TOUCHES
With the main part taken care of, I could then focus on the typography and layout of the poster. I went for a more delicate font to match the fragility of the exhibition.
